My presentation will introduce and analyze the science-fiction game Hardspace: Shipbreaker (2022) with regard to its depiction of labor, exploitation, and worker organization. The game puts players in the role of workers dismantling decommissioned spaceships under dangerous conditions in order to pay off their debts to a megacorporation. The presentation will focus on how precarious labor relations, surveillance, debt, and collective organization are negotiated through both gameplay mechanics and narrative structures. It will also discuss to what extent the game can be read as a commentary on contemporary debates surrounding labor conditions and workers’ struggles within the billion-dollar gaming industry.
